I’ve spent the weekend grading final papers in my 110 class and wishing that I was finishing Dawn Powell’s My Home is Far Away, a novel I started the other day. If you haven’t read Powell, I urge you to begin. Start right now. Today. She’s frigging awesome. My Home is Far Away, published in, I believe, 1942 or 1944, is one of the best novels I’ve read in ages.
As for the papers I’m grading, let me just say that though all my students know more about computers and technology than I ever will, it sure doesn’t help them in their writing.

Don, thanks for the suggestion–I just reserved Powell at the library. I’m stuck in the doledrums of the second book in the Master and Commander series by Patrick O’Brien and needed something else. The first book was so good–I never imagined I would read, let alone enjoy, anything having to do with sea adventures. But when O’Brien had Jack Aubrey escaping capture in a bear suit in the second book, he lost me.
Looking forward to reading your book when it comes out soon.
